The craze for guitars is nothing new, it has been around since forever. Us guitar players are always considered “cool” and that status took efforts and blood and sweat. But now that everything is available at the tip of our fingers, literally, we just have to know how to use the abundance of learning resources wisely. In this blog, I will talk you through the process of nailing those guitar basics in the first month itself.
Step One, Get a guitar.
If you are here and reading this blog, the chances are that you are searching for a beginner guide to guitars because you want to know things before buying one or you already have a guitar and want to know how to get started.
Offline stores will try to sell you some of the cheapest guitars in travel size or small sizes, but we don’t want to buy those. We need to think ahead because we don’t want to get stuck with a bad guitar. I am linking some guides for how to choose your first guitar here, for proper information, check those out.
Step Two, Understand the purpose
You have to know for what purpose you are willing to learn a guitar and then look up basic information about the terms such as chords, tabs, strumming patterns, etc.
Once you get a clear view of why you want to learn a guitar, you can use the proper resources according to your needs because someone who wants to learn guitar as a hobby might want to take a different and lighter approach than someone who wants to pursue a career in music.
Step Three, Get to know the instrument
Look at the guitar properly. Take your time and observe every nook and cranny of the instrument. Then the first thing you want to do is get to know the body parts of your guitar. The top of guitar is actually the big part with the sound hole in it. You want to get your terminology straight so that if you, for example, go one YouTube and look up a beginner guitar tutorial, you don’t get thrown off and understand the basic terms.
Step Four, Get ready to rock
You cannot put pressure on yourself as learning a guitar is a different experience for everyone and everyone’s timeline is different too. But what you can do is be patient with yourself and go along with tutorials. If you get stuck somewhere, leave it and revisit it after a day or two, because sometimes you have to give yourself some time and it comes to you.
I’m linking a 30-Day guitar Challenge by my collaborator, good friend and amazing music teacher Bernadette AKA Plazi. I guarantee you will learn a lot from this challenge and I have done this challenge and this is exactly how I learnt the basics of guitar in a month. We even have a Facebook group chat where there is a whole community of people who will be learning alongside you, including me, and we also host meetings and play the guitar together and learn and grow together.
I hope this blog helps people like me who struggled to get started with their guitar journey. Happy day/noon/night to my fellow, lovely guitarists!
